SCONES are something like small bread, cakes, muffins or sweets. Their origin is Irish, but some sources say they come from Scotland. The name comes from Danish and means “pure, fine white bread” and in Scottish it means “crush”. Maybe that’s why the pronounciation is different – “scOns” or “scOUns”. They are usually made from wheat flour, whole grain flour, or oatmeal, with baking powder (or baking soda), which are bakes on large flat trays. They can be sweet or salty and in some cases egg-washed before baking. Cheeses, fresh or frozen fruits can be added to them, and in modern kitchen fusion there are recipes with nuts (walnuts, almonds), honey, maple syrup, chocolate, olives, dried tomatoes in olive oil, ginger and many more.
Scones are a must-have during English tea drinking and are different from teacakes and other pastries made with yeast. They are traditionally served with Clotted cream, honey, molasses, and butter.
For me, they are one of the discoveries of this culinary year because they are quick and easy to prepare – there is no kneading and rising, which makes them very suitable for a quick morning breakfast or an afternoon snack. They are spread roughly on a floured surface, cut with a knife, a glass or any other shape that you have on hand, and rise so much in the oven that you can’t even believe it. And the various Scones options give free rein to your fancy!
Today I chose the recipe for MANY CHOCOLATE SCONES that I saw on the culinary website “Marmottes et chocolats”. These chocolate sweets are for people who fond of not only chocolate, but also of not very sweet pastries. If you choose to cook them, you can simply add a little more sugar or change the dark chocolate to milky. I liked it so much that I would soon prepare some salty version as well (I might come up with some recipe!).
Invite British cuisine to your home and try to prepare them! You will be amazed!
Enjoy! 🙂
INGREDIENTS:
DIRECTIONS:
Sift the flour in a bowl.
Sift the baking powder and mix.
Sift the cocoa powder, too.
Add the sugar and mix well with a whisk.
Add the cold butter, cut into small cubes.
Rub the butter between your fingers and the flour until fine crumbs are obtained.
Add the chocolate chips, too.
Mix everything up.
Add the milk.
Add the slightly beaten eggs.
Begin to mixing all the ingredients. Once the mixture has thickened, put on a slightly floured countertop.
You don't have to knead the dough a lot. It is enough to become homogeneous and to absorb all the ingredients.
Roll out the dough about 3-4 cm thick with a rolling pin.
Cut out the sweets with an optional cookie. Traditional scones are round with a diameter of about 7 cm. Therefore, for a cut, use a candy mold or a glass of approximately the same diameter or, as I did, the desired shape of approximately the same size. My daughter was jumping cheerfully around me, so I couldn't make round sweets. 🙂
Arrange the scones in a baking pan covered with parchment paper or a Teflon pad.
Bake the scones in a preheated oven at 170 degrees for about 16-18 minutes. They swell upwards and become twice thicker.
After removing the sweets from the oven, place them on a grid to cool.
Garnish with melted white chocolate. Enjoy! 🙂
If I can do it, so can you!
Bon appetit!
